In just two days, Tyron Woodley will defend his welterweight title for the first time against the surging Stephen Thompson.
The two fighters faced off earlier today in a rather tentative staredown at the pre-fight presser, but their championship bout at UFC 205 promises deliver a spectacle the New York fans won’t forget, according to champ Woodley.
“Stephen Thompson will be knocked out stiff at UFC 205. I will have the most memorable performance on the card,” ‘The Chosen One’ said in a recent interview.
Woodley, 34, is on a three-fight win streak and knocked out ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler earlier this year at UFC 201. The American Top Team product is a powerhouse wrestler with heavy hands, quite the opposite of Wonderboy Thompson.
Thompson, a life long martial artist, brings one of the most unique fighting styles to the welterweight division. The karateka has laser accurate striking and swift footwork, and has sharpened his take down defense over the years.
Thompson rides a seven-fight win streak and has beaten the likes of Jake Ellenberger, Johny Hendricks and Rory MacDonald. The 33 year old’s lone loss came to Matt Brown, who he lost to in his second UFC bout in 2012.
UFC 205, which features Woodley vs. Thompson in the co-main event, takes place on November 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
