Top seeds go down in semis at East Lake Cup

The reigning national champions took down the top seeds Tuesday in the semifinals at the East Lake Cup.

The Oregon Ducks beat Vanderbilt, 3-2, on the men’s side, and they will face Illinois after the Fighting Illini defeated Texas, 3-2.

Dylan Meyer came up big for Illinois, taking down Taylor Funk, 2 and 1, in the final match.

The biggest shocker of the day happened on the women’s side as Washington beat Stanford, 4-1, in a rematch of the national championship.

Stanford earned the No. 1 seed in stroke play Monday with a 6-under 282 total. The Cardinal were 34 shots better than the Huskies (28-over 316).

It didn’t matter on Tuesday.

Despite stroke-play champion Andrea Lee winning the opening match for Stanford, the Huskies came through in the next four matches. Ellen Takada and Julianne Alvarez won their matches, followed by Sarah Rhee and Wenyung Keh.

Washington will take on the Duke Blue Devils in the final. Duke defeated No. 2 UCLA, 3-2.
