Team California wins PGA Junior League title

Team California defeated Team Georgia to capture the PGA Junior League championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Twelve-year-old Alice Liu earned the winning putt for her team, which ultimately won the event by an 8-4 margin. The team from Las Positas Golf Course in Livermore also included Aidan Tran, Ethan Jaehn and Jacob Ponce, all 12, as well as 13-year-olds Ian Gilligan, Darren Pang, Drew Kim and Madison Wu and 14-year-olds Austin Tran and Anay Roge.

The team was captained by PGA pro Jeff DeBenedetti and coached by LPGA instructor Becky Chin.

The victory continues a recent run of dominance by Californian teams in this event. Squads from the Golden State have now won the event in four of the last five years, including a win by Las Positas in 2012.

While a record 36,000 boys and girls participated in PGA Junior League events this year, the top eight teams from around the country advanced to the national finals at Grayhawk. Team Ohio beat Team New Jersey in the third-place match, while Connecticut, Texas, Alabama and Illinois finished Nos. 5-8.
