Kyle Larson led Friday’s only round of practice for the Can-Am 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway.
Larson, driver of the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, had a best lap of 139.524 miles per hour around the flat one-mile PIR oval.
Second fast was the Team Penske Ford of Joey Logano, who ran 139.324 mph. Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. completed the top five.
But late in the session, Truex slapped the wall and his Furniture Row Racing team will have to go to a backup car for the race.
The big surprise during practice was Kevin Harvick, who has eight victories in Phoenix including wins in five of the last six races here. But in Friday’s practice, Harvick’s best lap was only 15th fastest.
The Can-Am 500 is the third and final race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Round of 8. Already, Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards have locked themselves into next week’s championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Two more drivers will clinch spots on Sunday.
Qualifying will take place today at 6:45 p.m. ET, with practices Saturday at 3 and 6 p.m. ET.
