Duke, Illinois take East Lake Cup titles

Illinois and Duke are the champions of the East Lake Cup, which wrapped up Wednesday at the famed course in Atlanta.

On the men’s side, Illinois successfully defended its 2015 East Lake championship, defeating Oregon 3-2 in the final. For the women, Duke defeated Washington, 3 1/2 to 1 1/2.

Bunker hole-outs were the order of the day for Illinois, as Nick Hardy had one in his 5-and-4 win over Edwin Yi. But Bryan Baumgarten one-upped his Illinois teammate, holing out from the sand on consecutive holes in his 5-and-4 win over Sulman Raza.

Also winning for Illinois was Edoardo Lipparelli, who defeated Nigel Lett, 2 and 1. Oregon’s winners were Wyndham Clark (1 up over Dylan Meyer) and Ryan Gronlund (5 and 4 over Michael Feagles).

For Duke, Virginia Elena Carter birdied the first three holes in defeating Ellen Takada, 7 and 6; Lisa Maguire defeated Eun Won Park, 1 up, and Sandy Choi defeated Sarah Rhee, 4 and 3. Duke’s Leona Maguire and Washington’s Julianne Alvarez halved, and Wenyung Keh was Washington’s only winner, defeating Ana Belac, 2 up.
