Cristiano Ronaldo just set yet another La Liga record with brace vs. Sporting Gijon

Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a brace against Sporting Gijon on Saturday, which is exactly what you’d expect from the Real Madrid man. But it was special for a much bigger reason.

Ronaldo is now the first player to score 30 goals in La Liga in a calendar year for seven years in a row. As far as records go, it’s a pretty specific-yet-amazing one. Just add it to the list of records that CR7 has managed to set over his career.

The 31-year-old now has 10 goals and six assists in 15 appearances across all competitions for Real Madrid this season. That has helped put Los Blancos comfortably atop the La Liga table, ahead of rival Barcelona who have a game in hand.

Ronaldo has been setting records seemingly non-stop this year at all levels of competition. He became the highest scorer in the history of the Madrid derby after a hat trick against Atletico last week, and at the same time extended his record for most total hat tricks in La Liga to 32. During the European Championship, he matched the record for all-time goals in the tournament. Earlier this month, he moved up to fourth on Europe’s all-time goal-scorer list with a lovely highlight reel-worthy volley.

The superstar has said he plays to stay with Real Madrid until he is 41 and then retire, so that gives him plenty of time to set a few more records along the way.
