By the numbers: How the 8 Chasers stack up at Phoenix
Only two spots remain open for the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in two weeks as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Phoenix International Raceway for the Can-Am 500.

Matt Kenseth, 16.26 avg. finish
Kenseth has never consistently figured out Phoenix and hasn’t posted back-to-back top 10s at the track since the 2010 season. In 27 career starts, Kenseth has posted one win and six top-5 finishes at Phoenix.
With a one-point deficit behind Joey Logano and his JGR teammate Kyle Busch in the Chase standings, he’ll need to find a strong finish, especially if Kevin Harvick goes to Victory Lane.

Joey Logano, 14.00
Logano has been better than his average finish in the past few years at Phoenix, finishing in the top 10 in five of the past six races. Overall, he has seven top-10 finishes in 15 career starts at the tri-oval track.
With the points standings so tight, Logano holds a one-point lead over the final transfer spot and will have his eyes on the three Joe Gibbs Racing cars who he’s battling for a spot in the Chase finale.

Kurt Busch, 13.37
The elder Busch brother faces a 34-point deficit heading into Phoenix but he’s finished seventh or better in the past four races in the desert. Busch has 16 top-10 finishes in 27 starts with his only win coming in April 2005.
Adding another win would be the most likely way for Busch to advance to the championship race at Homestead, outside of extreme misfortune for the five Chase drivers he’s battling for the final two spots.

Kyle Busch, 13.36
With almost identical numbers to his older brother Kurt in terms of wins and average finish, Rowdy has six top-10 finishes in his past eight races at Phoenix. Overall, he has one win and 14 top 10s in 22 career starts at the 1.022-mile tri-oval.
While a win would guarantee the younger Busch brother a spot in the Championship 4 at Homestead, he’ll be more focused on beating out his JGR teammates — Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin – and Team Penske driver Joey Logano, as the four drivers are within two points of each other in the standings.

Carl Edwards, 11.83
Edwards heads into Phoenix with a much more relaxed mindset after winning at Texas and extending his championship hopes to the final at Homestead in two weeks. He’s won twice at Phoenix and consistently runs up front, posting 13 top 10s in 24 career starts.
Expect Edwards to contend for the win after losing to Kevin Harvick by a photo finish in the Phoenix spring race, especially if winning will keep Harvick out of championship contention

Denny Hamlin, 11.05
The spring 2012 Phoenix race winner has posted 10 top 5s at the low-banked track and finished third in this season’s spring race. He’s had some mixed results in recent years but when he’s on, he’s a contender to win.
Hamlin joins the jumble of four drivers all separated by two points in the Chase and if he isn’t battling for the win, he’ll be points racing hard against the other three cars on Sunday.

Kevin Harvick, 10.26
The numbers Harvick has posted at Phoenix are exceptional. He’s won eight times, including five of the last six, led almost 1,500 laps, and posted a perfect driver rating three times. His worst finish since joining Stewart-Haas Racing at the track is second.
Harvick trails the Chase cutline by 18 points so he’s not fully in a must-win situation but winning is where his focus lies.

Jimmie Johnson, 7.85
Johnson has been playing with house money for most of the Chase after grabbing a victory in the first race in both the Round of 12 and 8. He’s finished in the top 5 in 15 of 26 starts in the desert and won four times.
With his sights set on Homestead and his record-tying seventh Sprint Cup title, expect Johnson to race hard on Sunday, knowing that he could play a role in who he’ll have to battle for the championship.
