How 8 Chase drivers stack up at Texas
Texas Motor Speedway will host Sunday’s AAA Texas 500, the second of the three races in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Round of 8.
Only four of the eight drivers still alive in the championship hunt will advance out of this round and race for a championship Nov. 20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Here’s how the eight remaining drivers measure up at TMS, a fast and treacherous 1.5-mile track, with aging pavement that allows for a lot of different racing lines.

Joey Logano, 17.5 average finish
Logano has the worst average finish of any driver at Texas, although he has one race victory and six top fives in 16 starts. He also ranks last among the eight in the NASCAR Driver Rating, where his score his 80.5.

Kurt Busch, 15.3
The elder Busch will have his work cut out for him at Texas, given that he has just one victory and three top fives in 27 starts here. To his credit, Busch does have 15 top 10s here, although his Driver Rating is 88.5, just seventh best out of the eight Chasers.

Carl Edwards, 14.2
Although he ranks relatively low in average finish at TMS, Edwards has three victories here, second only to the six Jimmie Johnson has. Edwards also has seven top-fives at Texas and a 97.6 Driver Rating, which ranks him fourth of the eight Chase drivers.

Kevin Harvick, 12.2
This is a bit of a puzzlement. Harvick is usually really good at 1.5-mile tracks, but he is the only Chase driver who has never won at Texas. And his 89.1 Driver Rating ranks him sixth of the eight championship hopefuls.

Denny Hamlin, 12.1
According to his 90.5 Driver Ranking, Hamlin is only fifth best of the final eight drivers at TMS this weekend. The flip side is he’s one of five drivers with multiple race victories here, although he has only five top-five finishes, a low total.

Kyle Busch, 11.9
The younger Busch won this race in the spring and certainly will be one of the favorites heading into this weekend. Busch has 10 top-five finishes here, one of only three drivers with double-digit totals in that category. Busch also ranks third in Driver Rating with a score of 102.9.

Matt Kenseth, 9.5
Put simply, the 2003 NASCAR champion is really, really good at TMS. Kenseth ranks second in average finish, Driver Rating (104.9) and top-five finishes here (13). For sure keep an eye on the Joe Gibbs Racing driver this weekend.

Jimmie Johnson, 8.3
Name a category at Texas and Johnson leads it: Wins (6), top fives (14), top 10s (20), Driver Rating (107.8) and laps led (1,023). With last weekend’s win at Martinsville, Johnson is the only driver guaranteed to be in the championship finale Nov. 20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
