Perhaps President-elect Donald Trump won’t be the last person to mix golf and politics.
Bubba Watson has no intentions of giving up his day job on the PGA Tour, but the two-time Masters champ told the Associated Press that he would consider running for future political office near his home town.
“I’ve had a dream,” Watson said. “I moved back in the city limits of Pensacola (Florida) so one day I can run for mayor.”
Watson is originally from Bagdad, Fla., and his involvement in the Pensacola area includes partial ownership of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos minor league baseball team as well as the opening of a candy store called “Bubba’s Sweet Spot.” According to the report, he is also expanding his business interests to include a car dealership and robotics company.
Watson has a house in Isleworth in Windermere, Fla., and also maintains a home at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. But at age 38, he could envision someday returning back to his roots and trading in his clubs for a seat at City Hall.
“The excitement around these businesses, the city of Pensacola realizes that I love them,” Watson said. “They brought me everything I have now. They took time to sponsor sporting events that I participated in. That’s the same thing I’m doing. I’m trying to help the community grow.”
