Alex Bowman said Friday he’s still looking for a car to race next year.
Bowman has filled in behind the wheel of the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr. for eight races this year with two more to come.
But he said Friday at Phoenix International that he has nothing in the pipeline yet in terms of a ride for 2017.
“No, I’m still waiting for the right opportunity to come along,” said Bowman. “There’s nothing that has really fit that has come along. I’ll still probably have my day job at Hendrick Motorsports driving the simulator. We’ll go from there.”

Bowman has shown speed this season, although his luck has not been the best. In his eight starts in the No. 88, he has had four top-15 finishes, including a best of seventh at Kansas Speedway.
“Really it’s been a big learning process on how Hendrick Motorsports works – the process on doing things, how they operate as a team,” Bowman said. “It’s been incredible to be a part of it, and I feel like I’ve learned a lot doing it. It’s been a lot of fun and a huge blessing in my life to do this.”
And so, Bowman is trying to use the experience as a fill-in for Earnhardt as an advantage.
“I’m trying to make the most of it but at the same time trying to have as much fun as I can,” Bowman said. “You never know when this is going to end or if you’re ever going to get an opportunity like this again.”
But he sure could use one next year.
